Washington D.C., February 22, 2016 about 3:30 p.m. a 61 year old woman was getting off the bus at L’Enfant Plaza when she was surrounded by four girls. One of the girls grabbed the woman’s purse and then took off running. The bus driver saw all this going down and decided he should offer his help.
The bus driver jumped off the bus and ran after the four girls chasing them into the Metro Rail station at L’Enfant Plaza. He chased them down the block before they entered the Metro station and police saw this going on and joined in the pursuit. The bus driver managed to get the woman’s purse back and catch all four assailants in the process.
A 15 year old and a 16 year old were arrested, handcuffed and charged with Strong arm robbery, force and violence. Another 15 year old was charged with resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer and fare evasion. The fourth girl, however, was not charged. It is unclear why the fourth girl was not charged.
A lot of people these days are afraid to ride the bus and the Metro due to the increase in violence and crime. I am one of them that used to love to ride the Metro Rail into D.C. instead of driving because it is a lot less stressful than trying to sit in hours of traffic to get into the city.
There is video of this incident and it shows exactly what the bus driver did to help this woman and stop the young kids from getting away. However, police are not releasing that due to the age of the suspects. It is a shame that we have to be afraid when we see a group of young people gathered together. We all need to be aware of our surroundings and watch for things that look wrong in our environment.
