One hot button topic in American politics and jurisprudence that gets mangled in language and ignorance is gun ownership. According to the document that set up the government, formal recognition that Americans have a right to keep and bear arms is enshrined. The only real way to rid the nation of the law itself, as it is part of the founding document whether liberals like it or not, is to go the amendment route…and when it comes to gun rights, that bill won’t make its way out of the House of Representatives.
As with everything else they can’t get legislated to their liking, liberals have taken to pressing their cases in the nation’s courts. The second amendment, and challenging the right to keep and bear arms, is no exception. It is one of many issues that guides liberal and leftist presidents in their choices for Supreme Court Justice. With the pick of Judge Neil Gorsuch, President Donald Trump indicates that the right to keep and bear arms in the United States will continue to be sustained from an originalist perspective. All indications from the world of law are that Gorsuch and his opinions reflect the late Justice Antonin Scalia, the man whose seat Gorsuch will assume if confirmed.
Gorsuch wrote this in the opinion for United States v. Games-Perez. A facts page summarizing Gorsuch’s positions contains his full statement, which says the Supreme Court has held that “the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own firearms and may not be infringed lightly.”
He also wrote that there is “a long tradition of widespread gun ownership by private individuals in this country.”
That, fellow deplorables, is a notion the left cannot tolerate. It matches only defense of killing children in the womb as a recipient of the left’s ferocity. And the night the pick was announced, the loonies of the leftist moonbats spoke out against the judge.
As we look forward to the confirmation procedings of President Trump’s first SCOTUS pick, it is worth remembering that Justice Scalia was hated not simply because of his life-affirming stances, but his defense of gun ownership rights, one of many aspects of American law the left seeks to change by hook or by crook. Judge Gorsuch will most likely be hated for the same reasons.
